This week, Del Mar officially unveiled its brand new lifeguard headquarters and beach safety center, just in time for the upcoming, hot summer months. The $2.6 million project was funded by the Friends of the Powerhouse fundraising group, the California Coastal Conservancy and the city. The two-story building is quite an improvement from the dilapidated tower, built-in 1964, that was there previously. The new headquarters features larger decks, a slide pole for easy access to the beach, and an expanded observation tower that sticks out farther towards the water for a better line of site for the lifeguards. State of the art technology such as infrared radars and advanced radio communications will allow crews to assist people faster. Other tower amenities include administrative space, locker rooms, bathrooms, a garage to house equipment and a first aid room. A seawall, boardwalk, outdoor showers, bike racks and drinking fountains were also installed. Over 2 million people visit Del Mar Beach every year. t is nice to know beach-goers will be even safer than before.
