Wednesday, July 18th marks the annual opening day at the Del Mar Racetrack. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people visit the track 'where the turf meets the surf' to bet on the ponies and this year will be no exception. San Diego shuts down on opening day (not really, but kind of) so be there or be square. Just follow the women in the large, Kentucky Derby-style hats and the men in their Sunday best. Over 45,000 people are expected at the track tomorrow. The gates open at 11:30am and the first race is at 2pm. Reserved seating has been sold out for weeks but tickets may be purchased in advance or at the gate. Parking can be tough and the walk a little dusty so we suggest parking near the Solana Beach Train Station and taking a shuttle. If tracks aren't your thing, you can always watch online at http://www.dmtc.com/live/ or check out the bars in and around Solana Beach and Del Mar for great people watching. Just make sure to enjoy one of San Diego's favorite days of the year and don't even think about driving on I-5!
