On Monday night, the Del Mar City Council voted unanimously to place the Village Specific Plan on the November ballot. If approved, the plan will replace many of the stop signs and traffic lights on Camino Del Mar between 9th and 15th street with roundabouts, convert portions of the road from 2 lanes to 1, and add 40 to 60 public parking spaces. The plan also allows for buildings on the west side of Camino Del Mar to rise from 14 to 26 feet which is the same maximum as the east side of the street. These improvements are estimated to cost between $4.5 and $5.5 million but will not result in any new taxes to current residents. Bird Rock, the coastal community south of La Jolla, replaced stop signs with roundabouts and added parking spaces a few years ago and the feedback has been very positive. Although, there were some businesses that closed during that time and still blame the decrease in customers on the long construction period and inaccessibility to the storefronts. It is up to the Del Mar voters now. We will keep you posted on the results in November!
