Plans for San Diego's first ever food hall are in the final stages and if all goes as planned, the appropriately titled 'Liberty Public Market' will be opening it's doors in Point Loma's Liberty Station area in June, 2015. The 22,000 square foot warehouse-style building, which was formally a Naval Training Center mess hall, will be developed into an indoor-outdoor market and will house over 30 vendors with goods such as seasonal produce, locally caught seafood, and artisan meats and cheeses. Food halls are one of the latest culinary crazes. As more and more people focus on organic and farm-to-table eating, there has been a strong increase in demand for homegrown products.
The mastermind behind this development is Coronado restauranteur David Spatofore. Spatofore's vision is to create a marketplace similar to the likes of the Ferry Building in San Francisco or the recently opened Anaheim Packing House but with less big companies and more mom and pop type businesses. Spatafore is on track to finish architectural renderings and secure permits by the end of the year. Construction on Liberty Public Market begins early next year.
